Hiccups are a very common phenomenon. Most hiccups are normal, and healthy individuals often experience them after consuming carbonated beverages like beer or soda, or after a heavy meal. If hiccups occur frequently, it may be worth considering a change in dietary habits. However, if frequent belching and hiccups persist even after adjusting your diet, it could indicate gastrointestinal disorders such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, chronic gastritis, gastric ulcers, functional dyspepsia, or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). In cases of these gastrointestinal conditions, belching is often not the only symptom and is usually accompanied by bloating, abdominal pain, acid reflux, or heartburn. Additionally, individuals with diabetes who take metformin or other glucose-lowering medications may also experience frequent belching, though this symptom tends to diminish over time with continued use of the medication.
