Omeprazole, when combined with metronidazole and two of the following antibiotics—amoxicillin, clarithromycin, or furazolidone—is primarily used to eradicate Helicobacter pylori.
Omeprazole is a type of proton pump inhibitor, whose main function is to suppress gastric acid secretion, increase the pH level in the stomach, and thereby promote ulcer healing and reduce acid production.
When used for Helicobacter pylori eradication, omeprazole is typically administered alongside antibiotics for a period of one to two weeks. The standard dosage of omeprazole is 20 mg, usually taken twice daily before breakfast and dinner.
The primary role of omeprazole also lies in treating Helicobacter pylori infections.
